In nature, animals eat when they are hungry and stop eating when they are no longer hungry. Human beings often eat out of habit, routine, boredom, or because they have been conditioned to believe that it is possible to eat for pleasure. There are several positive steps you can take to address these harmful trends.
Also
remember that you will not enjoy any meal, either concretely or mentally, if
you are not hungry. You need to have an appetite to get the most enjoyment from
a meal. Organize your eating routine so that you are sure to be hungry at
mealtimes, and don't spoil that precious appetite by snacking throughout the
day.
Also
remember that junk food will never satisfy your hunger. And that the best and
easiest way to stop eating junk food is to stop buying it.
Even today,
we tend to overfill the plates of our family and our guests. We had a group of
friends whose custom was to offer a profusion of incredible desserts, and we
could hardly refuse to touch them, for fear of offending them. Those whose turn
it was to host felt compelled to match, if not surpass, the performance of the
previous couple.
Paradoxically, during these dinners, the conversation mainly revolved around weight issues. There is no doubt that in times of restriction such abundance would have been formidable. But times have changed. For most people in Western society, the problem is rather overconsumption.
It was
thought clever to pour twice as much alcohol into people's glasses as they
wanted. Fortunately, campaigns such as “Drink or drive, you have to choose”
have sensitized the most receptive fringe of the population, and this practice
is on the decline. It's just as stupid to make a point of stuffing people with
food, even if they don't have a weight problem.
Remember
that your family and friends want a healthy and enjoyable life as much as you
do.
They will
appreciate you all the more the more you help them. If you notice any kind of
practices among your loved ones, settle it with them: change the situation,
make them understand that the ideal host is not the one who offers a profusion
of expensive junk food, but the one who offers a pleasant meal, nourishing and
profitable.
If you find
yourself with a plate that's too full, whether you've filled it yourself or
not, don't feel pressured to gobble it all up just because it's there, or out
of courtesy to your host.
Personally,
I find it frustrating not being able to clean my plate, but I have gotten into
the habit of asking myself during the meal: "Do you really always enjoy
this? If the answer is no, I stop eating. Remember that the less you eat in one
meal, the more you will enjoy the next. Avoid the peanut trap. That maddening
habit of friends and restaurant owners of sticking a bowl of peanuts, crisps
and other appetizers right in your face the minute you get home. It is mental
cruelty. They are only subjecting you to temptation.
If you can
avoid ytouching, you'll be fine, but eat just one crisps or peanut, and before
you've had a chance to say phew, you've cleaned the bowl completely. You'll
lose your appetite, and you'll wonder why the meal won't seem as enjoyable and
delicious as it should have been. I don't need to show any willpower to resist
the temptation to swallow that first peanut or that first crisps. It is enough
for me to know that if I had taken it, I could not have stopped myself from
emptying the bowl, and you cannot imagine the pleasure it gives me. Pleasure
moreover increased by the spectacle of the poor wretches who cram this filth
into the dumpster. Friends and restaurant owners should know that it is cruelty
to subject your guests and customers to such a temptation.
Don't be a
slave to the conditioning of your taste buds. Remember that foods with high
water content taste the best, and try to follow the rules of timing and combination.
Before concluding, I promised to broach a subject that does not really relate to the problems weight. It's a separate topic, but I'm dealing with it because I believe it's essential for a healthy, happy and enjoyable life as well: PHYSICAL EXERCISE.
